Married Man Sues Florist for Revealing Affair

A married man is suing 1-800-Flowers for $1 million for revealing that he was cheating on his wife.

Leroy Greer said in a lawsuit filed this week in a federal court in Texas that he bought flowers for his girlfriend through 1-800-Flowers. He asked to keep his purchase private.

Greer said he was referred to the company’s privacy policy, which states that customers can ask 1-800-Flowers not to share personal information with “third parties.”

But, the lawsuit says, 1-800-Flowers sent a thank-you note to his house and his wife saw it. When she called the company, 1-800-Flowers faxed her a copy of the receipt from Greer’s secret purchase.

The receipt revealed that Greer had sent another woman a dozen long-stemmed red roses, along with a note that read, “Just wanted to say that I love you and you mean the world to me!” according to court documents.

For the record, Tango and the Daily Dish do not condone cheating. It’s lame. It’s hurtful. And it lacks creativity. Communication helps. Some people work their way into an open marriage (click to see our portrait of an open marriage) and some people wind up divorced. That being said, we think that 1-800-Flowers may be in the wrong here. Or at least a specific employee may be in the wrong. We’ve bought flowers before. Sometimes we want to express sorrow, sympathy, romance, thanks et cetera. And what better way than with a bunch of cut flowers, a nice plush teddy bear and an embarrassingly short note? We’ve even forgotten the note and had them call us and ask if we minded them telling the recipient that it was us. We said ‘what the hay, if Tracy Morgan wants to know who wishes him well, you let ‘er rip Mr. Telephone operator.’ The point is that the whole transaction is supposed to be anonymous. Sure this guy got karmic justice, but that’s not what’s at stake here. Our guess is that 1-800-Flowers will settle with this guy. Maybe they’ll offer free flowers for life.
