Study Finds that One In Three Online Daters Has Sex On First Date

Women who date online are likely to take precautions to protect their personal safety when first meeting a man face-to-face, but often are much less careful about protecting their sexual health once that encounter moves to the next level, a Houston-based study has found.

While the women who were surveyed went to great lengths to screen online acquaintances before meeting them, nearly a third reported having sex on the first date and three-quarters of those said they did not use condoms, according to the study by The University of Texas School of Public Health.

Those behaviors reflect a “virtual intimacy” the women developed with men online before meeting them in person, said the study’s author, Paige Padgett.

Tango’s Take
This is hard to believe… at first. But when one analyzes the situation a little, it makes perfect sense. Some number of online daters are just in it for the sex. That makes sense. There was an episode of Entourage this season involving a furry costume fetishist met through Craigslist. But dating online has a few advantages over meeting people out and about. First, they fill out a profile and probably have a picture. So, you have a little bit of an idea of what you’re getting into. And people feel that the dating sites provide some level of safety (not a great assumption). And finally, there is some level of banter between prospective daters that allow them to get to know each other before meeting. Those things make it a little easier to want to do it on the first date. Oh and most online dating enthusiasts are probably a leeetle bit lonely and really just ready to pounce on the first person that’s willing to do it. There’s a little bit of a just got out of jail/ the Army corollary. Our advise is to be very careful, take it slow and (we can’t believe we’re saying this) use condoms.

Met my love online. He STILL had to wait until Date 3 - virtual intimacy or not.

OMG! They’re (gasp!) not using condoms! They’re not practicing safe sex(tm)! Call John Ashcroft! Call SWAT! Call Mike Nifong!

I’m sure that part was put into the article just to be politically, liberally correct. Well, sorry, honey, wake up and smell the latex - no one uses a condom that doesn’t have to. Sure you can get diseases that won’t go away - but you can get that anywhere. But the incidence of heterosexual AIDS is so low as to be almost nonexistent - but it’s been trotted out as yet another not-so-transparent attempt to discourage sex between non-married folks by the religious right for years now. Too bad the liberal left has been sucked into the same nonsense.

That being said, I’ve been dating the same woman exclusively now for a couple of months, we’ve gone WAY past Date 3, and we still haven’t even had sexual contact. We’re both waiting for us both to feel totally comfortable with each other and with the idea of that sort of commitment to each other. If we do, great. If we don’t, great. But it takes the pressure off the question that’s at the back of most people’s minds and puts the attention on developing the relationship as a whole - where it belongs.
