Neil Diamond Reveals The Inspiration For ‘Sweet Caroline’

Neil Diamond held onto the secret for decades, but he has finally revealed that President Kennedy’s daughter was the inspiration for his smash hit “Sweet Caroline.”

“I’ve never discussed it with anybody before — intentionally,” the 66-year-old singer-songwriter told The Associated Press on Monday during a break from recording. “I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday.”

He got his chance last week when he performed the song via satellite at Caroline Kennedy’s 50th birthday party.

Diamond was a “young, broke songwriter” when a photo of the president’s daughter in a news magazine caught his eye.

Tango’s Take

Oh, thank God that this is the explanation to that song. We always figured that Will Ferrell’s Neil Diamond was pretty spot on. That he wrote this song after being involved in a hit-and-run accident. We’re starting to doubt that entire sketch now. Ferrell’s Diamond was a vicious racist hopped up on painkillers. The real Diamond seems pretty nice. We’re betting that he doesn’t even have ‘downright dangerous sexual habits.’ Whatever the case, we’re super psyched that aging artists are starting to spill the beans on inspiration. It’s only matter of time before Carly Simon drops the dime on who’s so vain.

If you feel like laughing, check out Will Ferrell as Neil Diamond.
