Don’t get me wrong—Planet XY may not insult its audience as much as Planet XX, but in its own way, it’s just as unrealistic. Which got me wondering if there was anyone out there selling stuff on TV without scaring women or humoring men.
And one Saturday, looking for a baseball game, I found it—an oasis of happiness in between the golf and tennis programs of afternoon network sports. There, couples walked together on the beach, content and peaceful. They drove through the woods, at reasonable speeds, smiling wordlessly at each other. They looked like the sort of men and women who had survived all sorts of ups and downs and were still in love.
What’s the secret to their contentment? They’re retired. They’re pitching retirement accounts and safe cars and expensive anniversary jewelry. And they’re all old enough to be my parents.
So there’s hope.

Dear Mr. Nelson,
Thank you for your article showing that you, unlike many people, have attempted to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. You are absolutely right, men are validated even if they act like slobbering idiots and women are constantly goaded into self-judgment and deprecation. The message this society give to adults and children alike is Men are people and have a God-given right to be admired and have fun after a “hard day’s work”, Women’s work is STILL never done and they have to be the hottest chickie on the planet to get approval from even the biggest male losers.Thanks.

Oh, yeah, JC, it’s women’s fault that they’re stereotyped in the media, and if we want to end it, all we have to do is to stop buying cleaning supplies! I wish my world was as simple as yours!

Men are portrayed as absolute morons in American advertising and who’s complaining? No one. Ad companies have their hands tied by the ropes of political correctness. The ads that are geared toward women are just a reflection of the giant percentage of their demographic that make up most of the consumers and the ads depict males as bumbling idiots reinforcing a mostly negative male image. Ads geared toward men are at least in admiration of women (albeit eye candy, it’s still a positive image however twisted it may be). Women could very easily force the advertising to change; stop consuming. And if you want advertising to be a bit more loving and peaceful, ask the guiding force of advertising (women) to take a stand in defense of men and demand that they stop poisoning the minds of our culture with male bashing propaganda. And if women don’t want to be viewed as eye candy, they can stop viewing each other that way. It just may end up a win/win situation for everyone.

Love all those fattening food ads surrounding the articles here. (subconscious message: you need to fatten out wallets by clicking on the rediculous fatbombs).
