Fact: Long-distance relationships are tough.

But more couples than ever seem to be embracing the distance. Why? According to PsychCentral, more lovestruck Gen Yers than ever are struggling with launching two careers simultaneously—in separate cities.

Of course, LDRs do have an upside: The miles apart can allow you to focus on your respective ambitions and allow time for introspection. “You know that you two deserve time alone and don’t have to feel guilty about it. You get to know yourself better as an individual,” says Sonal Dash, who’s in a VLDR.

The real challenge is creating and maintaining the context of being a couple in daily life. It’s much easier to talk, build a shared social circle, and obviously talk, kiss and cuddle when you’re physically close. With distance, a partner’s presence can be relegated to a very one-sided conversation with a photo on a desk.
