Why Arranged Marriages Are Ideal

(Sometimes.)

by Maureen

arranged marriageI know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “This is not Tango’s M.O. They’re always boasting about freedom and choice…”

But I have to say, based on what I’ve heard from other cultures, arranged marriages seem to work for some. Take this CNN article on arranged marriages going high-tech. I had planned to write about the trend, but I was more impressed with the insight the article provided.

In the last paragraph the young Indian woman being interviewed explains that her parents were open to anyone she might meet and bring home, but she “appreciated her parents doing the tough work of screening potential suitors.”

“[My parents] always told me, ‘If you find someone, let us know,’” says Huma, who was in graduate school when she met her husband. “But, honestly, I didn’t find anyone. I was like, ‘I’ll take all the help I can get!’”

Western culture is chomping at the bit to chastise arranged marriages, but this just shows that maybe it’s not such a bad thing.

Thoughts? Comments? Tell me what you’re thinking.

Sometimes I wish this was still an option. Isn’t it the same as your friends setting you up on blind dates because they know you so well?
