Celebrity Virginity Vows
Selena Gomez is the latest celeb to just say no to sex before marriage.

Selena Gomez is a minor star in the Disney universe who is hoping to go supernova like Zac Efron and Hilary Duff. In what seems like a response to the recent “sex” scandals (that involved no sex, mind you) that have plagued fellow tween celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens, Gomez is speaking out on her desire to stay chaste. Says the 15 year star of The Wizards of Waverly Place even went so far as to ask her dad for a promise ring.
I applaud Gomez for her strong sense of self and her religious beliefs, but why put a bullseye on your back like that? After all, isn’t this the same kind of road that Britney Spears traveled down until she lost her mind and became the substance abusing, sex crazed tabloid star she is today?
I hope that things turn out differently for Selena and celebrities like her. After all, she’s not the only young celebrity to be making big promises after her future. The Jonas Brothers, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, and supermodel Adriana Lima have all publicly spoken about their desire to stay a virgin until they’re married.

I applaud Selena for the guts to take this vow in today’s society where girls seem to look up more to Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian than anyone else. However, I do hope she combines here vow of chastity with having chaste habits in general; what I mean is, you can be a virgin celebrity and still be an icon of sex to society, the hypocrisy of which unfortunately only makes such celebrities more popular. Like the author states, Britney Spears went the not-so-chaste way after her virginity vow, but I am sure that the fact that she took it attracted EVEN MORE publicity to the fact that she let loose. And have you seen Adriana Lima’s general style of posing in pictures? She looks like a toned-down porn star, and has appeared fully naked more than once. The idea of such a sexy star being a virgin is a paradox that only heatens up males more, which adds even more to such girls’ popularity. What I’m hoping for is that Selena shows that chastity is more about a girl’s self-respect than it is about some technical aspect of virginity. So Selena, whatever you do please stay consistent and all the best!
