The New York Times agrees with Tango: teen marriages don’t last. In fact, they’re about two-and-a-half times more likely to end in divorce. According to the Times, in the 1950s the female marrying median age was 19, and nuptials in the second decade of life were so common the phrase “teen marriage” wasn’t commonly used. Today the median age is 25.5.
Teen brides may be less common today because fewer teen girls are getting pregnant, however the Times points out that there’s no way to know how many of the 19-year-olds who married in the 1950s did so because they had a diaper-filler on the way.
Which brings us to Bristol Palin, of course. (You can’t get away from here these days!) The National Enquirer, bastion of respectable journalism, reports that Sarah Palin wanted her daughter to get married before breaking the news about her pregnancy, but Bristol refused. Bristol does plan to wed Levi Johnston, the 18-year-old father of her baby. Will the marriage last? If not, would they divorce while Palin was in the White House? We’ll have to wait and see…
